Eco and Sustainable Schools

Eco Schools and Sustainable School

This year, we at Sibsey Free Primary School are aiming to be recognised as a Sustainable and an Eco School. The two projects go hand in hand, with the aim of following the Eco School programme resulting in us eventually being awarded a ‘Green Flag’ for our endeavours.

These projects will involve every member of the school, their families and the wider community.

One of Sibsey Free School Governing Body Targets for this academic year is to enable the school to become ‘Greener’ and prepare the pupils for a lifetime of sustainable living through teaching and by example. The core principles of both of these projects are:-

  • Care for oneself – our health and wellbeing
  • Care for each other – across cultures, distances and generations
  • Care for the Environment – near and far

We will break down the projects into the following sections:-

  • Healthy Living
  • Travel and Traffic
  • Buildings and Grounds
  • Energy and Water
  • Purchasing and Waste (including recycling)
  • Inclusion and Participation
  • Local well-being
  • Global Dimension (including Biodiversity)

There will be a huge amount of pupil participation in these two long-term projects, with pupils already active on the Eco-Committee. There will also be appointed Eco-Warriors in each year group/classroom to monitor the waste, energy (ie turning off lights and monitors on standby) and closing windows. They will be putting into practice water, energy and waste minimisation procedures and monitoring the school utility bills to see the practical implications of their actions.

Putting this into the hands of the pupils should enable them to put practical solutions into operation both within the school environment and also within their own homes.
